Nestor Ivanovych Makhno (or Daddy Makhno as he was colloquially known) was a Ukrainian revolutionary and ‘head’ of the Revolutionary Insurrectionary Army of Ukraine (or simply Anarchist Black Army as they fought under the black flag) throughout the Russian Civil War and into a period of insurrection following the ceding of Ukraine to the Central Powers in the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk of 1918. Note in the photograph he is the one kneeling. Purged and persecuted by Bolshevik’s and eventually crushed by German troops in the Ukraine, Makhno fled to Paris where he worked as a carpenter and subsequently a stage hand at the Paris Opera film studio until his untimely death from tuberculosis in 1934.
No! No! No! That is not Makhno och Makhnovshchina troops. The uniforms give a hint that the troops might be american or from the British commonwealth. They are definitely not Ukrainian anarchists. And the guy kneeling looks nothing like Makhno.
